From Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast: Mastering Stress-Free Cat Travel

Traveling with pets, especially cats, can be an adventure in itself, especially when it involves a long drive like from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast (which was around 20 hours all up!). As devoted cat parents, we embarked on this journey with our feline trio and learned some invaluable tips along the way. In this guide, I will walk you through everything you need to know to ensure a safe and comfortable trip for both you and your cats.

  1. Choosing the Right Enclosure:

    • We opted for a large enclosure custom designed by Betta Pet Systems in Preston, Melbourne, to be able to fit in the back of my car.

    • The enclosure provided ample space for bedding and had a high-walled litter tray to contain any potential litter spillage, essential for long drives. It didn't feel claustrophobic for them at all.

    • The enclosure fit in my Subaru Forester (my car at the time) with the seats down. The enclosure measured: 94cm width, 79cm depth and 71cm height.

  2. Packing Essentials:

    • Cozy bedding: Make sure your cats have a comfortable spot to rest during the journey. An igloo box bed is excellent bedding so your cats can feel like they have space to hide.

    • High-walled litter: Preventing spills and keep the litter contained.

    • Secured food and water bowls: Avoid messes by securing bowls to the enclosure. These can be purchased at any pet shop. These are often called 'hook-on' water and food bowels.

    • Wipes & a garbage bag for any accidentsIf any of the cats have an accident or get car sick, having wipes to quickly clean up the mess is a must! We had a packet of Cat by Dr Lisa cat wipes on hand just in case. You can also use non-fragrant baby wipes.

    • Bring a carrier or two just in caseIn the event you need to remove your cat from the enclosure or separate your cats, having a spare carrier or two can be really helpful. To make our extra carriers fit in the car, we just disassembled them and they fit without a problem!

  3. Preparing Your Cats:

    • Allow the cats to get familiar with the enclosure so they feel it's a safe space for them. We popped the enclosure in our living room a month before we knew we were going to be making the drive up and the cats loved spending time in there. When it came to putting the enclosure in the car, they weren't overwhelmed because it was a familiar environment for them.

    • Book your cats in for a health check at least 3-4 weeks before you travel to ensure any health issues are address and they can prescribe medication for travel.

    • Consult your vet about oral sedation options to help keep your cats calm during the journey. We used gabapentin for all three of our cats. Trial the sedation at home under your vet's guidance to establish what the appropriate dose is for your cat.

    • Consider anti-nausea medication, such as maropitant, to prevent car sickness. This will need to be dispensed by your vet.

    • Use Feliway, a feline pheromone, that can help create a calmer environment. Just give 1-2 sprays on their favourite blanket or bedding. This can be purchased at your local pet shop.

  4. On the Road:

    • We drove 10 hours each day and spent the night in a pet-friendly Air BnB. The cats could stretch their legs, use the litter tray more comfortably and we could all get a good night's rest. Make sure that you ask the Air BnB host for the measurements of the entrance door so the enclosure can fit through without issue! Then you don't need to take them out of the enclosure to move them into your accommodation!

    • In the car, keep the temperature in the car comfortable for your cats, and don't leave them unattended.

    • Play calming music in the car. Don't have the music blasting as this creates stress. There are lots of playlists on YouTube and Spotify you can choose from!

    • Be patient and understanding; some cats may feel anxious during travel, so offer reassurance and comfort as needed.

With careful preparation and the right equipment, traveling with cats can be a rewarding experience for both you and your furry companions. By following these tips and consulting with your vet, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for all. 🐱🐾

Safe travels!
